Back to the Trenches To the teacher or parent: These blogs outline ways that I learned to help teachers for several decades. Maybe it can help you or one of your colleagues. (200 words) Let’s take Maloney Method – Back to the Trenches! In 1975, the Hastings County school board offered me a full-time position as a âpsychologistâ. Back then, almost no-one knew what a behavioral psychologist was. Having been a teacher in school systems before, I knew that some principals were wary of âpsychologistsâ. They would have much preferred spending the money on more teaching staff. I knew that I needed a quick win to gain their trust and confidence. There was a special school for children who suffered from what was then referred to as âmental retardationâ. This school of 40-50 students was most definitely underserved. There were at least half of these students who had never been toilet trained. Staff spent a good part of each day toileting and cleaning up kids. I decided to get these kids functioning in the bathroom as other kids do. Dave, the principal, was only too happy to help, so we trained one of the classroom aides to toilet train all of the kids who needed it. It took three weeks and there were no more âaccidents. Needless to say, the staff was thrilled. The parents and even the bus drivers were appreciative. When Dave described our project to the monthly principalsâ meeting, I suddenly developed instant credibility. Back at his school, we could now spend more time working on developing these kidsâ language and social skills.
